While seamless gutters have only grown in popularity lately, there’s a good reason traditional seamed gutters remain popular for homeowners. Generally, sectional, seamed or box gutters are less expensive. Since sectional gutters can be pre-manufactured and hauled to the site in pieces, they’re less expensive to produce. So, if you’re comparing a sectional “K” style aluminum gutter to the same “K” style aluminum gutter in a seamless option, the sectional will be more affordable. While you’re putting more money up front to get a longer lifespan, you may also be limiting your design options since seamless gutters offer less availability in styles and materials.
In fact, since sectional gutters have a much larger array of decorative design combinations, they can, in some cases, end up more expensive than standard seamless. For example, a seamless copper half-round gutter with double beading detail would be well above what you would pay for a normal “K” style seamless gutter. Other considerations are how many sections, corners, and detail in your architecture and structure of your roof. If you have a non-standard roof with dormers, eaves and valleys, the cost effectiveness of seamed gutters may become negligible when adding in the cost of fittings and installation. As with any home improvement project, the price depends on the situation.
Another reason homeowners continue to choose seamed or sectional gutters is their friendliness for DIYers. Seamless gutters require fabrication by a contractor. Sectional gutters and fittings can be purchased at any home improvement store. Sectional gutters are also easier to repair. A single damaged section can be removed and replaced, as opposed to seamless gutters, where the entire run is one piece.
Seamed gutters can be made of all types of materials including aluminum, vinyl, steel or even more unique and decorative materials like copper or zinc. They are manufactured in sections, and have corresponding fittings to join each section together, forming a single joined gutter. When you manufacture in pieces as opposed to fabricating on-site from a machine that uses a handful of templates to produce sizes and styles, the possibilities are endless.
Sectional gutters can be manufactured from Aluminum, Vinyl, Steel, Galvanized Steel, Wood and Zinc.
Sectional gutters come in a range of sizes between 5” and 8”.
Here are just a handful of styles:
- “K” STYLE– Known for the decorative shape that resembles the letter K.
- HALF-ROUND – A rounded half tube style.
- FASCIA GUTTERS – Attached directly to the fascia board, giving them a “built-in” appearance.
- BOX GUTTERS – A deeper box style gutter, meant for larger amounts of water.
- EUROPEAN GUTTERS – Half-rounded gutters with ornate designs.
- YANKEE GUTTERS – Mostly used on historic homes, a built-in or hidden style gutter.
All those styles have their own sub-styles like Straight Face, Valley Gutter, Mini Line, V Style, Ogee, and more. Some manufacturers just use the alphabet to differentiate from one style to the next. With sectional or “seemed” gutters, you are only limited by your imagination. Gutters can absolutely “make” a home.
