WHAT ARE SOFFIT AND FASCIA?
WHAT ARE SOFFIT AND FASCIA?
Soffit and Fascia are an essential component of your roofing system. If you’re not sure what they are or which is which, you’re not alone. Many times, phone inquiries begin with “the stuff that’s under the roof ledge.” And it is, in fact, that stuff that’s under your roof ledge. Soffits are the boards under the eaves of your roof, that fill the area between your roof ledge and exterior wall. This is where ventilation is located to help prevent moisture and assist airflow to your attic. Fascia is the long board that runs the edge of the roof facing forward, typically the board from which your gutters hang. Soffit and fascia are not just essential to the performance of your roof but also provides a finished look to the top of your home, under the roof. The easiest way to remember is “fascia” is the front “facing” board. The soffit is the other one.
WHAT DO SOFFIT AND FASCIA DO?
WHAT DO SOFFIT AND FASCIA DO?
Soffit and fascia are important for both form and function. Soffits are the primary ventilation method for your attic. And ventilation prevents all sorts of terrible things you don’t want like:
- ROOF DAMAGE: When heat can’t escape from your attic, it can leave shingles brittle and even warp roof sheathing. When it’s cold, trapped air can create condensation, which can “wave” or warp your roof and even decrease its ability to hold weight. Ever seen a wavy or buckled or humped roof? Soffit can be blamed in many of those situations.
- ICE DAMS: Trapped heat is the primary cause of ice dams on a roof.
- LOST ENERGY EFFICIENCY: Without proper ventilation, you’re heating and cooling systems are working less efficiently, costing you money.
- PESTS: With improper or poorly maintained soffit, you can make your home a breeding ground for pests like squirrels, bats, birds, raccoons, bees and more.
- MOLD AND MILDEW: Humidity is a breeding ground for mold and mildew. And poor ventilation is the primary way humidity has a home in your attic.
Your fascia is important too. It protects the home from water, wind, pests and the elements and assists the soffit with ventilating your rafters. Fascia supports the weight of your gutter system, and the last row of shingles on your roof. It keeps the shingles where they were meant to be and resists sagging or loosening.
